Pippa Hicks from Pipsty Puffin Art

Midday Makers

Hello, I’m Pippa, or as my mum used to call me, Pipsy Puffin! I love getting messy with paint, creating energetic artworks featuring nature or wildlife, often with an animal focal point. I usually work on canvases, with acrylic paints, often using fluid art techniques in my own way, and sometimes I even use paint brushes!

I also love to pick up a pen and illustrate simple bear or Puffin drawings, which I turn into cards or prints. I am keen to make art affordable and accessible to all, and cards and prints are a great way to do this.

I studied art until A Level, where I thought, like many others I’m sure, that there are no jobs in art. So I trained as a physio and have been working as a neuro and community rehab physio for the last 10 years.

Due to studying, I got out of the habit of creating, and it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I picked up the paint brush again and let those creative juices flow. I was on maternity leave with my first little puffling, and the thought of returning to work and leaving our comfortable little bubble filled me with anxiety. I, like many new mums, had lost my identity, and coupled with a dose of uncertainty I began to struggle. But art gave me a bit of ‘me’ back, and helped me to manage my worries.

By calling it a business instead of a hobby, I was able to prioritise this time, and have since grown this into something I’m beginning to feel quite proud of! Given how much art has helped me, I’ve recently developed some positive art cards and prints, as well as a series of mindful postcards to colour and send, and give others a little bit of ‘me’ time back.

Motivating children with BBC Bitesize teacher Dave McPartlin

Inspiring Interviews

Our interview with headteacher and BBC Bitesize presenter Dave McPartlin covered advice on keeping children motivated and creative.

You may remember Dave from his school’s appearance on Britain’s Got Talent in 2019. Flakefleet Primary school sang and danced their way to the final of BGT as David Walliams’ golden buzzer act. It was all part of the school’s #DareToDream campaign to teach the children that they can achieve anything they strive for – along with a bid for Christmas No 1 with their song ‘Light Up’ the previous year.
